How to Sidestep Temptation

06.23.19

“Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil so that I take part in wicked deeds along with those who are evildoers; do not let me eat their delicacies... But my eyes are fixed on you, Sovereign Lord; in you I take refuge—do not give me over to death.” Psalm‬ ‭141:4, 8‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Certain things just draw me in. Take gelato for instance. We were traveling recently, staying in another town. Near our hotel was a gelato shop. Every day as we walked past, my feet seemed to move of their own accord into that shop.

Sin can be attractive like that. It can effortlessly draw us in. But imagine a gelato shop that sold poisonous gelato. Tastes great! Leaves you dead!

That’s more of what sin is like.

There’s a solution. Thank goodness! It's Jesus. If I keep looking at Jesus—allowing his love and faithfulness to fill my eyes—then I can sidestep the poisonous temptation of sin. Over time, the peace he gives me becomes more valuable to me than whatever anything else is offering me. That something else won't compare.

The cure for temptation is not me. It’s not more effort and self-control on my part. It’s worship of Jesus—becoming more and more absorbed by his tender, protective love. It's knowing and feeling the peace in my heart that only his grace, his plan, and his forgiveness offer me.

Truly, nothing else compares.
